- 1 cup molasses
- 1 cup butter-flavored shortening
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 3/4 teaspoon ground cloves

- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 6 cups flour
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, mix together molasses, butter-flavored shortening, sugar, egg, and hot water until creamy.
- In another bowl, whisk together baking soda, cloves, cinnamon, salt, and ginger. Gradually add this mixture to the wet ingredients.
- Slowly incorporate flour one cup at a time until a soft dough forms.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick and cut out shapes using cookie cutters.
- Place cookies on greased baking sheets and bake for about 10 minutes until edges are lightly browned.
- Cool the cookies on wire racks before decorating with icing.
