  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup whole milk (warm)
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter (for laminating)
  • 7 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for filling)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Glaze ingredients: powdered sugar, milk or lemon juice

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. In another bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk and let sit until foamy. Combine all ingredients to form dough.
  2. Knead until smooth, cover, and chill for 30 minutes.
  3. Prepare a butter block by pounding cold butter between parchment sheets into an 8-inch square; chill.
  4. Roll dough into a square, place butter block in center, fold corners over it, then roll into a rectangle and fold like a letter. Repeat rolling and folding two more times with chilling in between.
  5. Cut final dough into squares, fill with cream cheese mixture, shape as desired, and let rise on baking sheets for one hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 390°F (200°C) and bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Cool before glazing with powdered sugar mixed with milk or lemon juice.
