- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (for frosting)
- Pinch of salt (for frosting)

Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease your baking pans.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
- In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time and mix well. Stir in vanilla extract and lemon zest if using.
- Gradually add dry ingredients and buttermilk to the creamed mixture until just combined.
- Fold in fresh blackberries gently.
- Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for about 32 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Allow cakes to cool before frosting with a mixture of cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and blackberry puree.
